MARC 21 Concise Bibliographic: Holdings, Location, Alternate Graphics, etc. Fields (841-88X)

Fields 841-886 contain descriptions for data elements which are an integral part of the MARC 21 Format for Bibliographic Data and data elements which may appear either in bibliographic records or in separate MARC holdings records.
Field 850 is a bibliographic record field that contains minimal holdings location holdings location data. Field 852 contains more extensive location data. Field 856 covers information about the location of electronic resources. These fields are described in this document. Fields 841-845, 853-855, and 863-878 are only listed here. Fuller descriptions for them appear in the MARC 21 Concise Format for Holdings Data.
Fields 880 and 886 are special-use bibliographic data fields.

Identifies the organization holding the item or from which it is available. This field may also contain detailed information about how to locate the item in a collection.

$b - Sublocation or collection (R)
The specific department, library, collection, etc., within the holding organization in which the item is located or from which it is available.
$c - Shelving location (R)
$e - Address (R)
Street address, city, state, zip code, and country information for the current physical location of the item.
$f - Coded location qualifier (R)
A two- or three-character code that identifies the specific issues of the item that are located apart from the main holdings of the same item. Subfield $f immediately follows the subfield $a, $b, or $c being qualified.

An identification of a single piece when the holdings information does not contain a field 863-865 (Enumeration and Chronology) or 876-878 (Item Information) that contains a subfield $p (Piece designation).
$q - Piece physical condition (NR)
A description of any unusual characteristic of the physical condition of the piece when the information does not contain a field 863-865 (Enumeration and Chronology) or 876-878 (Item Information) that contains a subfield $q (Piece physical condition).
$s - Copyright article-fee code (R)
$t - Copy number (NR)
A copy number or a range of numbers for copies that have the same location and call number when the holdings information does not contain an 863-865 Enumeration and Chronology field that contains subfield $t (Copy number).
$x - Nonpublic note (R)
Information that is not written in a form adequate for public display.
$z - Public note (R)
$2 - Source of classification or shelving scheme (NR)
$3 - Materials specified (NR)
Identifies the part of the bibliographic item to which the field applies. Subfield $3 is the first subfield in the field.

856 - ELECTRONIC LOCATION AND ACCESS (R)

This field contains the information needed to locate and access an electronic resource. The field may be used in a bibliographic record for a resource when that resource or a subset of it is available electronically. In addition, it may be used to locate and access an electronic version of a non-electronic resource described in the bibliographic record or a related electronic resource.
Field 856 is repeated when the location data elements vary (the URL in subfield $u or subfields $a, $b, $d, when used). It is also repeated when more than one access method is used, different portions of the item are available electronically, mirror sites are recorded, different formats/resolutions with different URLs are indicated, and related items are recorded.

Indicators

First - Access method
Contains a value that defines the access method to the electronic resource. If the resource is available by more than one access method, the field is repeated. When recording a URL in subfield $u, the value corresponds to the access method (URL scheme), which is also the first element in the string.
- # - No information provided
  Indicates that no information about access method is provided. This value is used when subfield $g contains a URN and there is no URL recorded in subfield $u. When subfield $u contains a URL and subfield $g is also present with a URN, the indicator value for the appropriate access method of the URL is given.
- 0 - Email
  Indicates that access is through the Mail Transfer Protocol (MAILTP).
- 1 - FTP
  Indicates that access is through the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).
- 2 - Remote login (Telnet)
  Indicates that access is through remote login using an application such as Telnet.
- 3 - Dial-up
  Indicates that access to the electronic resource is through a conventional telephone line (dial-up).
- 4 - HTTP
  Indicates that access to the electronic resource is through the Hypertext Transfer Protocol.
- 7 - Method specified in subfield $2
Second - Relationship
Contains a value that identifies the relationship between the electronic resource at the location identified in field 856 and the item described in the record as a whole. Subfield $3 is used to provide further information about the relationship if it is not a one-to-one relationship.

  Indicates that the electronic location in field 856 is for the same resource described by the record as a whole. In this case, the item represented by the bibliographic record is an electronic resource. If the data in field 856 relates to a constituent unit of the resource represented by the record, subfield $3 is used to specify the portion(s) to which the field applies.
- 1 - Version of resource
  Indicates that the location in field 856 is for an electronic version of the resource described by the record. In this case, the item represented by the bibliographic record is not electronic but an electronic version is available. If the data in field 856 relates to a constituent unit of the resource represented by the record, subfield $3 is used to specify the portion(s) to which the field applies.
- 2 - Related resource
  Indicates that the location in field 856 is for an electronic resource that is related to the item described by the record. In this case, the item represented by the bibliographic record is not the electronic resource itself. Subfield $3 can be used to further characterize the relationship between the electronic item identified in field 856 and the item represented by the bibliographic record as a whole.

Subfield Codes

$a - Host name (R)
Contains the fully qualified domain (host name) of the electronic location. It contains a network address which is repeated if there is more than one address for the same host. The convention for a BITNET address is to add .bitnet.

$b - Access number (R)
Contains the access number associated with a host. It can contain the Internet Protocol (IP) numeric address if the item is an Internet resource, or a telephone number if dial-up access is provided through a telephone line. This data may change frequently and may be generated by the system, rather than statically stored.

$c - Compression information (R)
Contains information about the compression of a file, in particular, whether a specific program is required to decompress the file.

$d - Path (R)
Contains the path, the series of logical directory and subdirectory names where a file is stored.

$f - Electronic name (R)
Contains the electronic name of a file as it exists in the directory/subdirectory indicated in subfield $d.

$g - Uniform Resource Name (R)
Contains the URN for the electronic resource. A URN provides a globally unique location-independent identifier that can be used for identification of the resource and thus facilitates access to the resource. The content of the subfield includes the initials "urn".

$h - Processor of request (NR)
Contains the username, or processor of the request; generally the data which precedes the "@" in the host address.

$i - Instruction (R)
Contains an instruction needed for the remote host to process a request.

$j - Bits per second (NR)

$k - Password (NR)

$l - Logon (NR)
Contains characters needed to connect (i.e., " logon", " login", etc.) to an electronic resource or FTP site. This subfield is used to record general-use logon strings which do not require special security.

$m - Contact for access assistance (R)

$n - Name of location of host (NR)
Contains the full name of the location of the host in subfield $a, including its geographical location.

$o - Operating system (NR)

$p - Port (NR)
Contains the portion of the address that identifies the process or service in the host.

$q - Electronic format type (NR)
Contains an identification of the electronic format type, which is the data representation of the resource, such as text/HTML, ASCII, Postscript file, executable application, or JPEG image. Electronic format type may be taken from enumerated lists such as registered Internet Media Types (MIME types).

$r - Settings (NR)

$s - File size (R)

$t - Terminal emulation (R)

$u - Uniform Resource Locator (NR)
Contains the URL, which provides standard syntax for locating an object using existing Internet protocols. Field 856 is structured to allow for the creation of a URL from the concatenation of other separate 856 subfields. Subfield $u may be used instead of those separate subfields or in addition to them. The field is repeated if more than one URL needs to be recorded

This field is used when converting foreign MARC records into the MARC format. It contains data from a foreign MARC record for which there is no corresponding MARC field.

$2 - Source of data (NR)
Subfield $2 is the first subfield in the field. It contains the MARC code for the foreign MARC format from which the record is converted. (The code is taken from the MARC Code List for Relators, Sources, Description Conventions and is an authoritative-agency data element.)
